Red bricks and parks: Forssa’s building and cultural heritage

Join us in this one-hour tour to learn about Forssa’s history, its past and present. It’s a great way to experience how Forssa was founded, its industrial heritage and how the later societal changes can be seen in the city today. During the tour, we also focus on the perspective of the more recent decades of the 1960’s and 1970’s.

How was it possible that in this small remote location in the far Northeastern part of Europe, a factory town and community was born in the late 1840’s? We will follow the growth path along the footsteps of its founder, Axel Wahren. You will also see how the town developed into a vivid modern center enabled by the significant cotton spinning and textile printing industry as well as precast cement construction business.

Forssa’s architectural gems stem from the early brick industrial factory buildings and decorative wooden houses, surrounded by lovely parks, to major urban housing blocks. In the midst of these many building layers, there are also some examples of functionalism style.

During the tour, the accredited guides will present old photos, provided by the Forssa Museum, to illustrate how the life and the community was in its origin as well as in the 60’s and 70’s.

Let’s have fun together! The city walking tour is an easy walk suitable for kids and elders alike (about 1.5 km). Bring your water bottle, if it is warm, and umbrellas if it raining. Welcome! Children under 18 years free of charge.
